Marshmallow Fluff Rice Krispie Treats

So, why would you want to use marshmallow fluff instead of a regular bag of marshmallows? Maybe your grocery store is out of marshmallows. Maybe you already have a jar of fluff for Fluffer-Nutters sandwiches (are you thinking Fluffer-Nutter Rice Krispie Treats? I know I am!).

Marshmallow fluff is easy to use, takes less time to mix with butter and Rice Krispies, and why not use it? You can quickly use it to make Original Rice Krispie Treats, Cocoa Krispie Treats, Lucky Charms Cereal Bars, or any other number of snacks.

Making marshmallow fluff rice krispie treats is very similar to using regular marshmallows. In addition to being a little easier and quicker though, marshmallow fluff tends to also be a bit less sticky. This means less mess and less chewy treats.

How to Make Rice Krispie Treats with Marshmallow Fluff

To make these treats, it is essentially the same as making original rice krispie treats only less melting time.

First you want to gather your ingredients together:

  • Marshmallow Fluff
  • Rice Krispie Cereal
  • Butter
  • (option) non-stick cooking spray

Then, you want to make sure you have all of your supplies ready:

  • 9×13 pan
  • Spatula
  • microwave safe bowl or pot

Before you getting melting, you want to make sure you have your pan and spatula pre-greased. Even though the marshmallow fluff is a tad less sticky than melting actual marshmallows, it can still be a sticky mess.

You'll want to use either a pad of butter or non-stick cooking spray and thoroughly coat both the 9X13 pan and the spatula with it. Non-stick cooking spray tends to be a smidge easier to get a good coating with, but also has a different taste than real butter.

Step One

Take out your trusty large stock pot and melt 1 tablespoon of butter on medium heat. Once your butter is melted, you will want to scoop your jar of marshmallow fluff into the pot with the melted butter. Stir until everything is mixed together well and reduce the heat to low or medium-low.

Just like a regular pack of marshmallows, you will not want to over heat the fluff. It will also become stiff and not pliable enough to mix Rice Krispies in easily.

Alternatively, you can heat it all together in the microwave. If you use the microwave method, then you can melt the butter and fluff together. Start out with about a minute to heat. Remove and stir. Then, pop back into the microwave at about 30 – 60 second increments until it is thoroughly melted together.

Step Two

When you have a good melty marshmallow mess (say that 5 times fast) dump in your 6 measured cups of Rice Krispies. Use your spatula and mix everything together. Continue mixing until all of the cereal is covered in marshmallows.

Make sure not to crush the cereal as you mix it all together. Also, you will want to try and do this a little fast otherwise the marshmallow mixture starts to get a little hard.

Step Three

Take out a 9×13 baking pan and spray the bottom and sides with a flavorless cooking spray. We prefer canola oil, but you can use whatever you like.

Scoop your Rice Krispie Treat mix from the stock pot and into the baking pan. Flatten your mix unto the bottom of your pan with a spatula. The batter should fill the entire bottom of the pan. You'll want to pack these together a bit since the fluff is a little different of a texture than regular marshmallows. But, still don't crush the ceral down.

Step Four

Set your Rice Krispie Treats to the side and allow to cool. Once your marshmallow fluff Rice Krispie Treats have cooled you can cut them. Take a sharp knife and cut them into squares. We typically get 15-16 squares oer batch.

Serve and enjoy!

Storage

If you don't indulge in the entire batch all at once, they you will want to store any remaining treats in an air tight container. They stay good for about 5 days or so.

You can also double the recipe and make two full batches. Then you can consider freezing Rice Krispie Treats for later. To freeze them, wrap the treats, pop them in a freezer bag and stick them in the freezer. They will be super hard when you remove them, so make sure to give them a few hours to defrost.
